Hidden in the greenery on 2 hectares of land overlooking the salt pans is the historic “Landhuis Jan Thiel”. The history of Jan Thiel Lodge goes all the way back to the 17th century when the skipper Jan Thielen (hence the name) took possession of the plantation.
The estate has gone through several owners and impoverished over the years, but fortunately the mansion has undergone quite a metamorphosis since the last owners bought the estate in 2016 and decided to share this magical place with everyone.

If you are looking for a unique experience and a very special accommodation in Curacao then you just have to book an overnight at Jan Thiel Lodge. It is such a special experience to be here, you just have to live it! The original owners said it when they bought it, this place is magical and you feel that with all your senses.
The estate is well hidden, in the busy and crowded part of the island less than 5 minutes drive from Jan Thiel Bay. You get there via a side road off the Caracas Bay road which you drive all the way until you reach a large gate to the estate.
When the gates slowly open for you and you drive onto the Jan Thiel estate you don’t know what you see. That’s partly because of the lush garden, but also because of the beautiful buildings including the Coach House that the previous owners have restored to their former glory.

The owners decided to make a Bed & Breakfast out of the house and its outbuildings because it is too big for them alone. They themselves live in the Coach House and Loeki, the face and hostess during your entire stay at Landhuis Jan Thiel also lives on site in an original kunuku house.
Landhuis Jan Thiel has 4 rooms, one suite and an apartment and can accommodate up to 20 guests in total. Guests come here mainly for the tranquility, but also for the relaxed atmosphere that hangs here. You feel immediately at home and that is exactly the intention.
As a guest you can always get your own cup of coffee or glass of wine from the old kitchen and every day a delicious breakfast is made for you, depending on your personal wishes. Loekie, the hostess is a wonderful cook and a top hostess! With her cooking skills it is really a pleasure to be here and Loeki makes sure in a very natural way that all the guests lack for nothing.

We stayed in the apartment. This is located behind the country house directly adjacent to the salt pans nature reserve and has 2 bedrooms, 2 ensuite bathrooms, an open kitchen with living room and private pool.

Wonderful picnic at plantation Jan Thiel
Absolute recommendation and tip from me is to book a picnic on the estate of Jan Thiel Lodge overlooking the Salt Pans. You can also book this separately if you are not going to stay here overnight, but make sure you book in time.
I had heard many stories about it so when we were there I absolutely wanted to experience the picnic myself. Once again Loeki puts together a delicious picnic with homemade snacks, homemade dip sauce, finger food snacks and a bottle of wine and water. And with a little luck, if the weather is nice – and normally the chances are good on Curaçao – you can watch a beautiful sunset over the salt pans.

We were here just at the beginning of the lockdown in Curacao, but noticed absolutely nothing because you live in your own bubble. We would have preferred to stay here longer, because it is really no punishment to be here during the lockdown, on the contrary!
On the website of Jan Thiel Lodge it also says, guests are served at their beck and call and that is really the case. This is also experienced by other guests during their stay. Many of them even come back and now I’ve been here I understand that like no other 🙂

Whether you want to spend the night, a summer picnic or a vacation with your whole family at countryhouse Jan Thiel, it’s all possible. Doing nothing is the motto of the owners and just enjoy. It is a “Way of life” once you are here. You feel connected to nature. You can walk for miles with the Salt Pans in your backyard. Totally unwind. Helping with the care of the horses, because yes they also have, but above all intensely enjoy!
I look back on a very special and pleasant time with my family. I’m not married yet, but secretly I can already picture it, because it is also a very romantic wedding location, to rent the whole house and to celebrate your wedding very intimate with a small group of people. Who knows, one day, but for now I can only dream back to this magical place.
