Discover Javea: popular holiday destination on the Costa Blanca

Javea (or Xàbia), located on the sunny Costa Blanca in Spain, is a popular destination for young and old. This attractive town with its historic center, located 1 km inland, attracts especially families with children with its clear waters, charming old town and beautiful coastline. Here you will discover not only traditional Spanish life, but also stylish hotspots, hidden coves and many nice restaurants.

Jávea is tucked between the Montgo Natural Park and the Mediterranean Sea on the Costa Blanca North. This beach town, loved by locals and vacationers alike, offers the best of both worlds: an ancient historic center full of character and a coastline with beautiful (child-friendly) beaches and hidden coves. Be sure to read on with my personal tips!

Old Town: History and Authentic Vibes

Start your day in Javea’s old town, where narrow, winding streets are surrounded by whitewashed houses with blue details and typical wrought-iron balconies you see so much of here. The Gothic church Iglesia de San Bartolomé and the local market, Mercat Municipal, are sights not to be missed.

Stroll through the charming streets surrounding the Plaza de la Iglesia. Don’t forget to stop at one of the traditional tapas bars, where you can enjoy authentic dishes with local ingredients such as fresh olives and Spanish wines. Here you can sample local specialties such as fresh jamón, cheeses and olives. For the enthusiast, there are plenty of boutiques and cute home furnishing shops to check out.

For a unique authentic experience, Jávea’s Saturday market offers a wide selection of artisan products, fresh fruits and Mediterranean delicacies. Good to know, the old town is high on the hill and is not directly close to the sea. You have to walk downhill for about 30 minutes to get to the beach. So it is convenient to rent a car otherwise the distances are too far is my insider tip.

The Historical Center: A Step Back in Time

Begin your visit in the historic heart of Jávea, where narrow streets, limestone houses and picturesque squares will make you feel as if you’ve stepped back in time. Visit the San Bartolomé Church, a Gothic masterpiece and beacon in the center, and wander the charming streets surrounding the Plaza de la Iglesia.

Enchanting Beaches and Bays

Jávea is famous for its crystal clear waters and a coastline with some of the most beautiful beaches in Spain. Playa del Arenal is the most popular beach, with a pleasant promenade surrounding the beach full of stylish cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy a cocktail overlooking the sunset. This beach is ideal for families, with calm waters and plenty of space for beach activities.

Want to discover a secluded spot? Cala Granadella and Cala Blanca are lesser-known gems, hidden among rugged rock formations and lush nature. These coves are perfect for snorkeling and admiring the colorful marine life up close.

Note Cala Granadella is a pebble beach though so I recommend bringing water shoes. Runs just a little nicer when you walk into the water 😉

Stylish Relaxing on the Coast

Javea’s coastline is breathtaking. A must-visit is the sandy beach of Arenal also called Playa de Arenal, with clear waters and a lively and cozy promenade. Here you will find plenty of trendy beach bars and cafes where you can enjoy delicious cocktails and tasty Spanish delicacies overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

La Siesta, a stylish beach pavilion right on the pebble beach towards the harbor, is a favorite hot spot for a relaxing lunch or sunset drink. La Siesta is not only fun to chill in the lounge sofas, but also serves dishes with a modern twist on traditional Mediterranean cuisine, perfect for lunch or a romantic dinner for two by candlelight.

Rocky Mountains and Natural Beauty

Jávea lies at the foot of the impressive Montgó mountain, a nature reserve with hiking trails that lead to panoramic viewpoints over the Mediterranean Sea. For the adventurous traveler, a hike to the top of Montgó offers unforgettable views and the chance to discover the region’s unique ecosystem, with wildflowers, aromatic herbs and sometimes wild goats.

Hiking across the Montgó Plain and Molins de la Plana

Every year when we come to Javea we go hiking across the Montgó plain from the Denia side on the flat plateau section before the road winds down. You can start the walk on the right side from the road towards the Montgo as in the picture below, or start the walk on the left side from the road and start at the monastery at the junction of Cami de les Pedres.

From here you can take a nice walk to the ancient mills (built between the 14th and 18th centuries) of “Molins de la Plana”, see pictures below. When you arrive at the mills you have a fantastic view over the bay of Javea and far beyond.

Secret Coves and Unspoiled Nature

For the adventurous traveler, Javea offers numerous hidden coves accessible only on foot or by kayak. Granadella, a secluded cove with turquoise waters surrounded by cliffs, is often cited as one of the most beautiful beaches in Spain. Bring your snorkeling kit, as the marine life here is very beautiful.

Another gem is Cala Barraca, with its iconic fishermen’s cottages and rocky inlets – a perfect spot for a quiet afternoon.

Culinary delights

Javea’s culinary scene offers something for everyone, from authentic tapas bars to upscale eateries. Sample local paella at Posidonia Restaurant overlooking the sea, or dine at BonAmb, an award-winning Michelin restaurant that combines traditional and modern flavors. Try the fresh seafood or be surprised by one of the tasting menus or a delicious pealla dish.

Jávea’s culinary scene is a delight for any foodie. Whether you are looking for a cozy tapas bar or a cozy seaside restaurant, the town offers something for everyone.

Stylish Stays in Javea

For an elegant overnight stay, Javea offers both boutique hotels and luxury villas. Hotel Nomad on Platja de la Grava beach offers a stylish bohemian atmosphere with rooms overlooking the sea. For a more intimate experience, opt for a private villa in the hills, where you can enjoy privacy and breathtaking coastal views.
