When I was writing my last blog, I was still in a great villa on the Costa Blanca. Already then I wrote, that from Dénia you can reach very conveniently the island of Formentera. This little sister of Ibiza is one of the four Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean sea off the coast of Dénia.
Formentera is the smallest inhabited island of the four and lies just 8 kilometers south of Ibiza. Formentera is a friendly island and a real paradise. It can best be described as the Caribbean of the Balearic Islands, the sea is here incredibly blue! Formentera is popular for its beautiful small coves, steep cliffs, sensational white beaches and crystal clear blue sea.

Explore Formentera by bike
Formentera is a perfect island to explore by bike or scooter, along beautiful lighthouses and small villages with white houses that are surrounded by colorful flower gardens and beautiful cacti. Every corner of the island brings another surprise…
The capital of Formentera is San Francisco Javier. Around the central square, which is dominated by a beautiful 18th century church, you will find good restaurants and nice shops. During the summer season there is every day a “hippy market” where artists sell paintings, jewelry and handmade clothes.
The main attraction of Formentera are surely the wonderful beaches and crystal clear sea in innumerable shades of blue. If you’re touring around the island, you can see countless beautiful beaches. The most famous (and prettiest) are:
1. Playa de Ses Illetes
Just north of La Savina – the cozy harbor where the ferries arrive from Ibiza – you find the dazzling white powdery beach Playa de Ses Illetes. Both the white sand, stretching as far as the eye can see, as well as the incredibly clear water contribute to the Caribbean feeling that this island is famous for. Here you can swim and relax on the beach while you dream away with the beautiful views.
2. Platja de Migjorn
Located on the southern coast of Formentera, the 6km long Playa Migjorn is by far the longest beach on the island. This popular spot enjoys fine white sand, a clear blue sea and some nice beach bars and restaurants. What else can you wish for?
3. Playa Es Pujols
This wide sandy beach is located in the village that carries the same name, Es Pujols, the main tourist center of the island. The beach is situated in a beautiful bay with small rocky islands off the coast, in the northeast of Formentera. Behind the beach lies a vast protected area of sand dunes, where you can take a nice walk on a wooden walkway that runs along the entire beach.
The nicest pictures underneath and above the sea

Calo des mort, Formentera
Tip: snorkeling enthusiasts really need to find their way to the village of Es Caló, on the east coast of Formentera. This is in fact one of the most beautiful places on the island to go snorkeling. The sea around Es Caló is breathtakingly bright and has a spectacular blue color, thanks to presence of minerals in the rocks that reflect the light.
Cap de Barbaria, located on the southwest coast of Formentera, is a rugged and quiet area ideal for walking or cycling. Here you really feel like you’re at the end of the world. A footpath will bring you to the lighthouse of Cap de Barbaria where you have a magnificent view over the cape.
The other famous lighthouse of Formentera, “Far de la Mola”, stands on the highest part of the island; standing on the cliffs you will be treated with majestic sea views.
For the most spectacular sunsets, head to Cala Saona, located on the westernmost tip of the island. In early summer you even have the chance to enjoy this spectacle on the beach all by your own.
How to get there?
Formentera is only accessible by boat. The fast ferry from Ibiza brings you in half an hour to La Savina, the car ferry takes about an hour. If you want to make the crossing from the mainland of Spain, you can take the ferry at Denia, this boat ride takes three hours.
