Bluewater Resort Sumilon Island, Cebu philippines

The Philippines is an archipelago in Southeast Asia of more than seven thousand islands in the eastern edge of Asia. Many wonderful beaches are only a part of this archipelago that a few years ago even has been voted to be the finest in the world. One of the countless islands of the Philippines is Cebu: a wonderful paradise.

Cebu is roughly located in the central part of the Philippines, commonly known as the Visayas. Cebu offers numerous white sand beaches, spectacular dive sites, and its capital Cebu City has a rich history. Many diving enthusiasts come here to swim with whale sharks in the waters of Oslob, where these huge animals slowly swim around you.

Bluewater Sumilon Island

One kilometer from the Oslob coast lies the island of Sumilon. This small, beautiful coral island is one of the best kept secrets of Cebu. The breathtaking view of the blue waters, lush tropical landscape and the calm sea give you the space and rest to relax. The clear blue water with different shades of aquamarine and pristine white beaches give this island a unique atmosphere.

People come to this semi-private island either to stay for a few nights, or as day tourist to see the “Shifting Sands” with their own eyes. This famous sandbar regularly changes shape and shifts location, depending on the season. From here you can go snorkeling and you can even spot small sharks when you are lucky.

On Sumilon island you can also hike, visit the lighthouse or explore the lagoon by canoe. You really have the feeling that you are on a private island somewhere in the Seychelles, but than in the Philippines. The water is so blue that it seems like you are in a photo shopped landscape. Absolutely beautiful!

Life on the island

On and around the island you can entertain yourself perfectly. You can dive and snorkel all day long. There are plenty of snorkeling sites around the island full of colorful corals and different species of marine life. The resort also offers excursions to watch dolphins, and to spot the popular whale sharks in Oslob. Curious what it is like to swim with this giant fish, check out the video here:

The resort is also home to a saltwater lagoon with mangrove trees along the banks. It serves as a hide-out for fish and other sea creatures. If you want to enjoy this beautiful nature, you can discover the lagoons with kayaks or paddle board. If you prefer to remain on land, you can also take a self-guided or guided walk on the island’s trails.

If you stay here longer, I can recommend you to take a boat trip to the mainland and take there the ferry to Dumaguete. Here you can hire a van that takes you to the pier for the crossing to Apo Island.

Apo Island is a great place to spot sea turtles. Really beautiful! I found this personally more relaxed then swimming with the whale sharks as the turtles swim at ease underneath you. I highly recommend this experience that is great for a day trip.

Shifting Sandbar

The Sumilon Island sandbar is a beautiful headland, that changes shape and even moves itself depending on the time of the year. The water is super clear here! Day tourists may only visit the sandbar from 8am to 5pm, but as a guest of Sumilon Bluewater Resort you have this piece of paradise all to yourself until the late hours.

The clear water of Sumilon island

This is the “best piece of sand” where you can sit to watch the sunset. During my stay, I was regularly sitting here. Just to stare at the sky that changed color from blue to pink and then to orange.

All alone on a sandbar … The nature on the island is beautiful and still unspoiled, a special moment to get never enough of.

Bluewater Resort Sumilion Island was my first meeting with the Philippines. The lovely people and the beauty of nature made a big impression on me. It was a privilege to be here. I can recommend this resort to everyone, especially in combination with a visit to Cebu or if you are traveling further to Dumaguete.

I will come back again, for sure!

How to get there?

You can fly to Cebu Mactan with Air Asia from all big cities in Asia. In Cebu you can pick up a car or take a bus (3 to 4 hours drive) heading south to Oslob. Close here, Bluewater Sumilon Island has a private pier. The crossing takes about 10 minutes and then you have arrived in paradise!
