Are you already familiar with the Gypset Style? Gypset is a mix between the Gypsy and Jetset culture. A style which is getting more trendy. Nowadays you can find more Gypset hotels that integrate these two styles in one theme. The characteristic of a Gypset hotel is that guests can feel themselves completely free and at the same time can fully enjoy all its luxuries.
Now guests of the Kanuhura Resort can enjoy a luxurious holiday while venturing into “Ibiza-style atmospheres.” Gypset means here lingering along the pool on large sofas, walking all day barefoot and feel completely free. And for the ladies among us, pull your dashing summer dresses out of the cupboard because at Kanuhura they come to full advantage.
The design
The recently completely renovated, Kanuhura Maldives has totally immersed its design in Gypset style. The result is impressive and turned out fantastic. Several designers from different countries have left their personal touch. Small stuff counts. Everywhere in the design, you notice their creativity and that makes it unique.
I visited Kanuhura shortly after the opening in December and was immediately impressed with the newly renovated villas. The interior is a mix of modern design and Gypset style. The atmosphere is very laid back while at the same time you can enjoy all the luxuries you would expect from a 5-star resort.
Beach Villas
The beach villas are completely renovated and finished with blue decorations that bring the aquamarine color of the azure sea inside. The villas are spacious and have a private terrace with access to a private pool overlooking the white beach.
Private island Jehunuhura
Unique to Kanuhura is their exclusive and secluded island called “Jehunuhura”, that lies next to the resort island. With a special taxi boat you reach the island within 5 minutes. Then you can enjoy lunch at the Driftwood restaurant or take a walk around the island you have all to yourself.
It is so quiet that in the season the sandpiper birds brood their eggs. Out of the hatching eggs come these super cute and fluffy piper birdies. You know, those lovely little birds famous from the Pixar movie.
Water villas
Always dreamed of a villa on the water? Kanahura has it all. The water villas have been completely refurbished. What I like about the interior is that the soft red color of the corals comes back in the design. The eye-catcher is surely the hammock in front of your terrace and in the bathroom!
Dining in de chef’s herb garden
In addition to Restaurant Drift on the private island, Kanahura has another six restaurants: Mano, where you can eat all day breakfast, lunch and dinner. Bottega, an Italian a la carte restaurant. Fogo, to my knowledge the only Brazilian restaurant in the Maldives. Dhoni offers a unique experience in a typical traditional boat from the Maldives. Super romantic and very special.
Choose Dagas if you like fusion cuisine and prefer to lounge beside the pool. Do you like to try something very different and do you love organic food? Then is the Chef’s Herb Garden maybe something for you.
In the organic vegetable garden, all kinds of herbs are grown. The smell of the various types of basil surrounds you. From the sweet Thai lime basil to the Thai holy basil that has a hint of nutmeg. Together with the chef, you can compose your dinner, but you can also opt to dine with friends or other guests at the long table in the middle of the herb garden.
Sunset cruise and night fishing
If you ask my boyfriend what was his greatest experience of the Maldives, he will say night fishing wholeheartedly 🙂 Along with the general manager and a few other guests of the resort we first went on a sunset cruise. The top of the traditional Dhoni boat is covered with lounge cushions perfect to chill out. The crew is serving finger food and champagne throughout the night until the sun goes down.
And the best part of the evening can begin (according to my boyfriend). Armed with only a line, hook and bait in your hand, you are supposed to catch as much fish as possible. In the beginning, it’s not easy, but once you get into the mood and you’re lucky you’ll catch the most tropical fish.
The good news for the real fish lovers among us is that they are brought back to land, and if you are lucky the chef cook will make for you fresh sashimi. Fresher and more organic than that doesn’t exist. I can recommend everyone this boat trip.
The team of Kanuhura
I couldn’t have imagined a better stay thanks to the great team that works here. Kanuhura has many returning guests, and they all come back because they feel united with the people who work here already since years. The management knows that Kanuhura’s team is the showpiece of the resort and invests a lot in them.
When I was there, I could even attend a team coaching session which was specially held a wellknown coach. She travels around the world giving coaching sessions to get people closer to themselves, and thus to each other. It was a special moment for me to be there and I felt the intimate relationship of the team. The result: joyous and well-trained staff who carry out their work with compassion and do everything to make you happy.
Say goodbye
Saying goodbye is hard. Kanuhura was my last stop in the Maldives, and I couldn’t have finished my trip better than here. I felt I have made friends for life. Thanks to these gorgeous girls and the rest of the team, we had a memorable time.
I understand now why guests love to come back here. Some people may need to get used to the new design of the resort, but they will for sure return for the people who work here. And oh yes, of course for the night fishing 😉
With the seaplane, you fly in about 40 minutes back to Malé.
